If anyone would like to help with the loon count on July 16th, we can still use a few counters. For more information on the loon count, please see post below. Contact Steve Buzzell via the contact form on this site by Wednesday, July 13th and he will assign you a place on the lake so that we can get the entire lake counted.

Clear your calendar for the morning of July 16th and join us for the 28th Maine Audubon annual loon count. All it takes is a short part of your day to help us count the loons on Nicatous Lake. If you are interested, please contact Steve Buzzell by using the contact form on this site or stop by camp.
The count takes place from 7 AM – 7:30 AM and is held rain or shine (or wind). All you need is a boat and a willingness to get and out a bit earlier than usual. We hope to hear from some of you. This lake is large and the more we can split it up, the better it will be to get an accurate count. Also, if anyone know of any nests on the lake, please let Steve know, even if you are unable to count the loons. He can note the nest sites on the final paperwork that he sends to the Audubon Society.
Most of us have found the various places to have lunch while ATVing or driving around out here in the boonies. There’s Nicatous Lodge (next on my list to try), the Pine Tree Store at Grand Lake Stream, and of course, Reggie’s Way. Now there is a new guy in town!! He is located about a half mile from the Lodge and has a wonderful variety of food.
You can read more about Jack’s Snack Shack by clicking HERE to go to my regular blog where I have written more and shown more photo’s. We ate here a couple of weeks ago and the food is excellent. Be sure to check it out!!
I know that many of you will be coming to camp for the Memorial Day weekend and just wanted to give one more road condition report.
As of today, May 26, 2011, the roads have not been graded and most likely will not be able to be graded before this weekend. As you might imagine, the rainy weather this spring has made grading the roads difficult, if not impossible. Roads are bumpy, wet, there is standing water in places and the shoulders are very soft.
Be careful driving in and try to stay in the center so that you don’t end up in a slough hole. Hopefully, it won’t be long until grading can take place.
Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.
The roads are open to Nicatous Lake, as or May 9, 2011. See you at camp!!
Because of heavy rains, the roads are impassable. The roads will NOT be opened on the 9th as AFM was hoping. They will re-evaluate road conditions on Monday and at this time, they are hoping that they will be able to open them on either Tuesday, the 10th or Wednesday, the 11th. I will post the opening date as soon a I find out.
Roads will still be closed at least through May 8th, when they will re-evaluate the condition. Check back for further updates.
Roads are still closed and will probably be closed to at least May 9th, depending on the conditions at that time. As of the 20th, the main roads were soft and the side roads were still snow covered. Stay tuned…
It’s spring in Maine and that mean the dreaded “MUD SEASON”. To find out the latest road closures and when they open again, you can call for the automated message at American Forest Management. The phone number is 207-827-3700 – Extension 100.
Mud season will be over before you know it.
For those of you that are asking what is going on with Steve and I and where we are, you can check out our website by clicking HERE. We are having a great time down here in Florida. We will soon be heading north and will see you all this summer at the lake.
