Important Notice On Gates:

Todd Massey (AFM Forester) has asked that we spread the word that NO cable gates are permitted on AFM or GMO managed land.  Also, all authorized gates need to be painted D.O.T. safety yellow (bright canary yellow). These changes need to be made for safety reasons. Please spread the word to any others in your area with gates. Thanks for your cooperation with this matter.

Meeting minutes (2010) & forest fires…

This is just a short note to say that I got the meeting minutes posted. Click HERE to go directly to the page.

On another note, I would  like to remind those of you that smoke to be absolutely sure that you extinguish you cigarette butt when you are done with it. On Sunday, a group of ATVer’s found that someone had thrown a live butt up on Horseshoe MT. The picnic table and some underbrush were burning when they found it. As you know, this summer has been very dry and had this not be found, we could have had a large wildfire. PLEASE remember to completely extinguish your cigarette butts and campfires. You know what Smokey says: “Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”. ;-)

Annual meeting…

The annual meeting went great.  For those of you looking for the meeting minutes, please be patient.   We are moving from our home of eighteen years and have to be out soon so much of my time has been spent sorting and packing. ;-)   Check back – hopefully I will get them done by the end of the week.

Recipes for cookbook…

Karen Ford is interested in doing a Nicatous cookbook and would love to get some of your favorite recipes. Recipes can be sent karen@lesvants.com  or if you wish, send them via the contact form on this site and I will forward them to Karen. Any money earned from this project could benefit a charity that would be selected by the Nicatous Lake Campowners Association.

27th Annual Loon Count is drawing near…

The Maine Audubon 27th annual loon count will be held on July 17, 2010. A few years ago, Steve Buzzell started to coordinate the loon count on Nicatous and he is looking for folks that are interested in being a loon counter this year.

The count will be held on July 17th from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. The count is held RAIN or SHINE so please know that no matter what the weather, the count is still held. If you are interested, please contact Steve via the contact form on this site. If anyone knows where there is a nesting site on the lake, please contact Steve even if you don’t want to be a counter. He will still be able to note the nesting sites on the paperwork that goes back to Maine Audubon.

On another note, Maine Audubon is holding the 2nd annual loon photo contest. The contest is open to anyone with a camera and there are prizes awarded to the winners. More info and contest rules can be found by clicking HERE.

The sounds of night at the lake…

We spent last weekend at the lake. The sounds at night are awesome. We hear many different frogs croaking and of course, the call of the loons. While sitting at the waters edge on Friday night, I thought that I would like to be able to share the sounds with the readers. If you have a camp on the lake or have spent a night tent camping, this is the sounds that you will hear or have heard.

I hope that you enjoy. Please note that I recorded this with my camera and it was dark so unfortunately all that you will be able to see is one spot where the neighbors light was on.  Sit back, relax, close you eyes, listen and enjoy!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.  Enjoy your day!

Out-of-state firewood banned in Maine…

Probably most of you have seen the notices but I thought that it might be good to do a post on this anyway. The Maine Legislature has banned all out-of-state firewood. The firewood from out-of-state can bring harmful insects and diseases that can destroy our forests.

The two major threats to our forests are the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) .  Thus far, they have not been found in Maine. To go directly to the Maine website for more info, please click on the graphic below or call the Maine Forest Service at (207) 287-2431 .

Road closures…

Todd Massey, who has taken over for Jim Ward, emailed the following message:

“All roads including the 32-00-0 road will be closed as of this Friday, March 12, due to spring mud season conditions. Roads will be reopened as soon as mud season ends and roads improve. Thank you for your cooperation.”

We will post again when he notifies us that the roads are open again.
