LifeFlight Site Now On South End Of Lake…

LifeFlight of Maine now has a new recognized site at the south end of Nicatous Lake.  This is great news for those of us with camps on that part of the lake and for those that atv, fish, hunt or snowmobile out that way. The site is located on the road across from the “Red Rock” on the 32-00-0 road (NOT on the gated side),  less than a quarter of a mile down.

If you have an emergency while in the area, CALL 911 and give them the Lifeflight “rendezvous point” which is the large letters & numbers in the middle of the sign. They are: HK-RP-003.

This will be a four-season site. The site will be maintained by the Nicatous Camp Owners Association and in the winter the state of Maine Off-road Vehicle Division has agreed to groom from the 37-00-0 road back to the site so that a helicopter could land in the area.

Hopefully, no one will ever need this site but it is very reassuring to know that it is out there so close to approximately 50 camps plus all the other folks that use our area.

For the camp owners out there – if you have a few minutes, check to see if any trimming is needed on the sides of the road around the site. Also pick up any of the slash that is in the area or on the road and get it back far enough so that the rotor wash doesn’t blow it around. If all of us take just a bit of time, we can keep this site cleared for any emergency that might arise.

Jim and Linda V. had the great idea to see if a Medivac site was possible. Thanks to Jim & Linda V. and Steve B. for all the work they did to get it done. Thanks, too, to JR of Lifeflight of Maine for his assistance, AFM for giving us permission to have the site on their property, and also to Scott R. and Joe H. from the state of Maine, Off-Road Vehicle Division,  for the extra grooming that will be done in the winter.

Dusty Diva’s dine at Nicatous Lodge

A group of us gals, dubbed the “Dusty Diva’s” by one of their guys , rode our ATV’s to Nicatous Lodge for lunch last week.  The lodge has been around since the 1940′s and stepping into the rustic lodge is like stepping back in time.

Lunch was great and Theresa & Jeff Harriman are delightful hosts. See more photo’s and read about the lodge and our excursion on my blog by clicking HERE.

28th Annual Maine Audubon Loon Count – July 16, 2011

Clear your calendar for the morning of July 16th and join us for the 28th Maine Audubon annual loon count.  All it takes is a short part of your day to help us count the loons on Nicatous Lake. If you are interested, please contact Steve Buzzell by using the contact form on this site or stop by camp.

The count takes place from 7 AM – 7:30 AM and is held rain or shine (or wind). All you need is a boat and a willingness to get and out a bit earlier than usual. We hope to hear from some of you. This lake is large and the more we can split it up, the better it will be to get an accurate count. Also, if anyone know of any nests on the lake, please let Steve know, even if you are unable to count the loons. He can note the nest sites on the final paperwork that he sends to the Audubon Society.

Jack’s Snack Shack…

Most of us have found the various places to have lunch while ATVing or driving around out here in the boonies. There’s Nicatous Lodge (next on my list to try), the Pine Tree Store at Grand Lake Stream, and of course, Reggie’s Way.  Now there is a new guy in town!! He is located about a half mile from the Lodge and has a wonderful variety of food.

You can read more about Jack’s Snack Shack by clicking HERE to go to my regular blog where I have written more and shown more photo’s. We ate here a couple of weeks ago and the food is excellent. Be sure to check it out!!

Nutkin Knoll Farm – Christmas Tree’s

If you are still looking for that perfect Christmas tree or wreath, and you are in the Newburg, Maine area, be sure to check out Nutkin Knoll Farm. Len & Nancy Price have a camp on the lake and would love for everyone to stop by.

Nicatous Lodge is open again…

Just wanted to let everyone know that Nicatous Lodge has reopened, under new management. The new managers, Jeff and Theresa Harriman, are familiar faces to many of us. The website says that it is open for food, gas and lodging. Check the website or give them a call for further details.

Congratulations and good luck, Jeff & Theresa.

Out-of-state firewood banned in Maine…

Probably most of you have seen the notices but I thought that it might be good to do a post on this anyway. The Maine Legislature has banned all out-of-state firewood. The firewood from out-of-state can bring harmful insects and diseases that can destroy our forests.

The two major threats to our forests are the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) .  Thus far, they have not been found in Maine. To go directly to the Maine website for more info, please click on the graphic below or call the Maine Forest Service at (207) 287-2431 .
